A great series, thanks to Bill and all his team.:)
Yeah, thanks Bill and all the Calder Valley mob, excellent weekend even the weather couldn't spoil it;)
I suppose you are right - I thought I might try your look - but I cannot quite see myself as a potato:D
Enjoyed series although in the end Potto and I were pipped by a Springfield runner who got 2nd place. He was 6th in the first race but lost several places yesterday which he then made up today. Also there was junior who ran well on friday and today but was not allowed to run the senior Bogs yesterday but did well in the junior version so he was included in the series results and came 3rd overall.
So the upshot was I was 4th and 1st vet overall and Potto was 5th I think.
Just like to echo a big thanks to Bill for all the work that he puts into the 3 day series and I really enjoyed Friday's and today's races. Was expecting numbers to be up this year, especially for wicken hill which would have been a good warm-up for blackstone edge next week. Strongly recommend that all forumites do this series next year - there's something for everyone: Fri: Steep; Sat: Navigation; Sun: Fast.
p.s. If you read this Bill can you keep hold of a copy of the Bogs route as I wouldn't mind having a go at it as a training run...
Cheers, CH.
What??? another youngster allowed in?? and he didn't even do yesterdays race?? I heard footsteps behind me on Friday and I thought it was a lady until near the summit I heard the young boy behind me ask 'are we near the top' when I told him yes he ran passed me and ran off!
Well done AS and the Springfield runner who made up all the places lost yesterday and everyone else who took part - except the under 16s they can sod off!!!:p
Results for today's race and the series now on: www.cvfr.co.uk
There were a pair of tracksters left in the pub after today's race. Let me know if they're yours.
Glad you enjoyed it folks. Its a shame that not many people do these races, but I still enjoy putting them on (by Sunday evening when its all over, anyway! :p )
Compared to me Potto is a young man.
Despite my name I thought it unfair to have a go at the juniors even though he did not do the route finding Bogs race (the junior version appeared to be marked) and no one was informed of the intention to include the placings in the junior races in the overall competiton meaning you could not run tactically or at least try to beat the person in question. However I am aghast to see that some of you are more miserable than me:)
My mate Dick Ballentine got caught out 2 years ago when he thought he had won vet 40 for the series, but it turned out Chris Smales had entered each race on the day and we did not know till after the last race, though it is unlikely he would beat Chris Dick was not racing him in his mind but targeting others who had signed up for all three races and was therefore at a disadvantage, whilst I suspect Chris knew exactly who he had to beat and by how much.
The young man deserved his prize, but it would have been nice to know starting the Tom Tittiman that he was a competitor for the overall placings and therefore competition to the rest of us.
Antisocial i cant cut and paste as its only in the Fixtures Calender but states the following under the calender entry "U16/U18 race counts towards Midsummer Madness series"
I know we felt a couple of years ago after the junior races started up that it was a way of drawing in more folk to compete who may well be hideously young but able to race Fri and Sun but not Sat due to distances.
Apologies if its not been publicised more obviously.
Lest I be mistaken for someone even grouchier than I really am, can I just state that I thought the performances by the young runners were fantastic. Who's doing the junior training at Halifax? Damn good job, I'd say.
Thanks a million Bill and the massive team of marshalls (particularly the fine fellow who swept me up in my disastorous "navigation" cock up on Saturday).
Always a pleasure to do this. But I'm looking forward to getting back to work now! :)
As I don't enter the the U16/U18 race I tend not to read the entry for it. Don't think it was on the tables for after the 2 races either, so apology accepted:)
I think its an excellent idea that the juniors are included and at least we will all know for next year.
I do think you however it is unfair of CVFR to train their juniors in the art of phsychological warfare, I ran part of the Wicken race breathing through my backside next to an under 14 who spent all the time chatting to me before he finally ran off.
Oh and well done Bill again for organising the whole thing. As you said it would be nice if more entered as it is a good series, Saturday was a real killer.
Thanks BillJ and your team of 55 helpers for another terrifically well organised weekend from all at Springfield.
I really enjoyed my walk on the tops on Saturday watching the headless chickens (with one or two notable exceptions). I spoke to many of the runners as they passed and without exception all seemed to be enjoying it, even if they hadn't got a clue where they were.
Thanks folks, on behalf of a great team of marshals!
I can see it could be a bit frustrating when someone who didn't think on Friday they'd do all 3 days, and then they get into the swing of things and end up entering each race, only appears on the series table at the end.
Perhaps when I publish the series standings after 2 races I should include everyone who's done both races, whether or not they've said that they are going to do all 3 ?
It'd be more complicated at registration, because some of those will have already paid for all 3 races, and some would still need to pay for the Sunday race; and it'd mean that several names drop out of the final list from people who never intended to run on Sunday anyway; but at least no new names should suddenly pop up on the final series table.
What do you think?
For the series race numbers for Saturday's race, I'd have to stick with only those people who have said in advance they are doing the series, otherwise everyone who raced on Friday would be on the list.
I think you should continue what you are doing, on the series standing on saturday night I saw there were people not entered for all three but I would have to beat if they turned up but at least I was forewarned (They did turn up and I did beat them - Yea Me).
However the bit that does need clarifying more is the status of the juniors in the series , if the race that they do instead of the Bogs full does not have a route finding element how can they be fairly included in the overall results? I think these are the sorts of issues that wil arise if and when the series really takes off which it deserves to.
I agree with Auntie Social. ;)
No need to make things any more complicated, you do a grand job as it is. As for the 'Junior' situation, it's a problem that's only arisen because a flurry of great youngsters has appeared; a good 'problem' to have!
Its the club committee meeting tomorrow evening so guess whats likely to be on the agenda. I agree that it needs some clarification as the coordinator of the juniors and organiser of the junior races it is the first time its cropped up as no one has run all 3. As our own juniors get older there will be an increasing number wishing to mix it up with the seniors and its only right that it is as fair as it can be for all concerned.
Sorry if my comments have caused hassle - certainly the juniors should be allowed to mix it up with the seniors (though decimate may be a fairer expression given the 2nd place obtained by one of your juniors). It does need clarifying though for future use. Would there be an issue in a limited navigation course? Its all skills that can be put to later use.
Not sure where we would stand on a navigational course for the juniors they are even more inclined than us seniors to get their heads down and charge paying little or no attention to any flags or route guidance. We will look at all options and ensure that any decisions are well publicised.
As for your comments causing any hassle you will have to try harder to cause upset - given your name you must be losing your touch;)
Sorry for the delay, but I added checkpoint positions to the Timothy Taylors Tom Tittiman results, in case anyone wants to see them.
By the way, we've decided to have a separate juniors results table for the 3-day series next year. It would have been a bit lonely on the results list on his own for young (but speedy ) Joseph Crossfield this year - but hopefully there might be a few more juniors doing all 3 races next year.
Also plan to have some kind of ceilidh or band on the Saturday night next year - like the ceilidh we had 4 years ago, that was just great fun! Should make it more of a complete weekend.
Any forumites doing the midsummer madness races?
It's a shame the weekend clashes with the championship race at Tebay :(, but I know there are people who (like me!) prefer smaller low-key races to the big championship fields.
I should warn you if you are doing it... I know I've commented that the Reservoir Bogs route is going to be "interesting" this year, but that view has been seconded.
Someone who knows what the race is about road-tested this year's route the other day. (He's the only person apart from the marshals and me who knows where its going to go, until the day).
I'm sure he won't mind me quoting him, since I know he reads the forum: "you display sociopathic tendencies as far as this race is concerned". :o
Remember, the important thing is to maintain your sense of humour. Especially for checkpoints 2 and 3. :D
I'll be there Bill, not sure about Friday night yet and you've just scared me about Saturday:eek:
If i can get the Mrs. to take the lad to cricket practice on friday, i'll be doing all 3;)
C'mon fellow forumites - you really should come along and do one or more of these races - you owe it to yourselves!! Friday is a Cat A quick blast up to Sheepstones with a good fast descent. Saturday should be good fun - take your chances or follow a cvfr or tod vest (;)) and there's no James Logue this year. Sun is a fast flatter race with a little bit of heather thrown in. All three races have a pub nearby (esp Sat and Sun that start from the pub) and there's good beer and lots of prizes.
Cheers, CH.
My mate Grahame (from Mercia) is going to be up again this year, after a long lay-off with injury.
Not sure about Dawsy from Telford - he normally does the Friday and Sunday with the York Bike Show in between, and the events do coincide again.
It's my year to be on the helping/marshalling side, so watch out for some high-quality sweeping on Friday and give me a cheery wave on Tom Tittiman (twice) on Sunday.
However, as its official historian, I felt obliged to commit myself to running the Bogs race, despite Bill's wild-eyed cackling ("You're all doomed I tell ye!").
No Friday night race for me, lad's cricket comes first, he's doing well and don't want him to miss it, will be there for the brutal bogs, lads doing the U10's, and be there on sunday, no James Logue eh, if everyone that's slower than James but faster than me, don't turn up, i might win a race:rolleyes:
Can't do Saturday now:(
Got to look after Mini-Merry as Miss Merry is doing Gymnastics, can be dropped off early by the Mrs. as Mini is still doing the Junior Bogs.
Now then Clash City Rocker, need any help marshalling at the Juniors?
I'll be there anyway;)
No not at the moment as I have scared up enough support from other interested parents to relieve the pressure on CVFR members, I will be up at Ambleside for junior race (although I have no chance of winning) but its always good to know there are possible backups should anyone not turn up. Andy will be in charge on the Sat so ask him when you get there.
Cheers
CCR
Many thanks to Bill and the team for putting on the usual fantastic race.
Apologies to all the helpers/marshalls if I didn't thank you individually, think this was the shortest fell race I've ever done, and I really enjoyed it but was breathing out of my ar5e for most of the race!
Good to see all the usual suspects.
By the way, your local needs you!
Thanks to Andy of CVFR for organising the Junior bogs races, Mini-Merry got a third place and a medal, although i never saw him run and i was marshalling:confused:
Seems some nippers went the wrong way, good do anyway, nice to meet AJF and see all the seniors finishing (some of them arse over bollocks).
Not Crowhill's kind of race but still managed second, well done mate.
Hopefully i'll get a pass out tomorrow to run the Tom Tittiman and have more chips and Guinness after:cool:
Well done all.
I wanted to do the Wicken Hill Whizz on Friday but was full of cold during the week. Couple of extra days to recover and so I'm looking forward to the Tom Tittiman tomorrow.
Great race! Toughest B class race I have ever done! So much was just tussocks, and bogs and paths were few and far between.
Cheers for a great race! Forgotten how much it is just a big bog up on the moors round there. Like a giant heathery wet sponge.
Also, good to put a name to a face merrylegs. I spotted your hair do and knew it was you ;)
Oh and tom tittiman is part of our club fell champs. Be interesting to see if any of our club actually turn up. Sorry I can't make it. 3 races in 4 days and I am on thin ice with the wife.
