Mrs STL did the second half Sunday but was wearing mudclaws. Simgreen, you must have been one of the people I asked about seeing a woman runner out there. I was expecting her to do the second half in about 2hrs, but she managed to slip in a couple of interesting detours which slowed her down. I think she has those bits sorted for the main day now.
Yep it was a beautiful day to be out there.:D
Nice to meet you STL.
Thanks for the run Simgreen.
Dear All.
Sorry if these questions have been asked before.
1) Which is the best route over Win Hill? Stick to the main track or the little trod which runs parallel to it?
2) The best route off Lose Hill?
Ta
Tim
1)very little in it. it's early in the race. go the opposite way to every one else for some peace! better running on top, rougher and marginally shorter below.
2) there's more than one? down to fence corner over this and down to path through the woods. if you want to go over back tor I guess you could?
Don't worry about Lose Hill Tim, last year it was pretty much marked as there was a marshall with a ladder as a makeshift stile.
The line isn't obvious outside of race day, but it's easy on the day.
Yes
It should be more trodden now as the the HPM does the same route in reverse. from corner/ladder/gate/fence drop down to where the path comes in from hope SK 1498 8504
i agree with that, unless your leading of course...
For the Winhill I have think my preference is with the main path. First time I did the race I took the trod and found I was held up behind people as there weren't easy spots to overtake. The other route is a bit longer but I found it easier running underfoot and easier to keep a steady pace going. Also no one is going to hold you up as it is a wide path.
Thanks very much eveyone.
Agreed. Last year two of us were immediately behind a group where the two routes diverge. They took the left hand path (narrow), & we took the main track to the right. We got to the top just before them, largely because there was a bit of a crocodile of people on the narrow path.
I know this one is probably covered earlier on but:
From Grindsbrook Knoll: round the edge of the plateau or down-and-up to Ringing Roger? or do people wait and see how trashed they feel?
I think these end of race route choices are great - last week I got it right and saved a couple of mins and about 10 places...
Cheers
Jim
A lot of variables to consider so I think unless you've definitively ruled it out prior to the race it's a case of deciding at the time. A few on here have done it on race day and lived to tell the tale.
As the Lakesrunner Skyline map says on the route notes re: the down and up, "Energy and balls needed!"
The up and down looks ok from the top of Ringing Roger but I've never tried it (and certainly won't on race day: balls not supplied).
Several people who are way better runners than me have stated they think the up and down might be up to five minutes slower, so that's good enough for me!
Besides, I love the section from Grindslow along the edge to Ringing Roger. It's a great way to finish a long race.
That's the point though: it's all runnable along the edge... I'm not quick on the levelish bits but I do pass people on the big climbs and descents. At the end of the LMV I made about 10 mins on a lot of folk I could barely keep up with on the easy first seven miles.
Hopefully I'll have a chance to recce it both ways...
Jim
Ran the first half this morning. Was a little bit windy up there.
Going up Ringing Roger was difficult, across Win Hill was tricky, the ascent of Lose Hill was just runnable and I nearly got blown off my feet when I reached the Trig at Mam Tor.
Forgot to put my Wave Harriers in the car as well, so ended up running round in my old road shoes (was fortunate that it's been pretty dry lately). Think it mostly went ok - stupidly took the main path after you drop down through the woods behind Back Tor, instead of skirting round the grassy slope to Hollins Cross - gave myself another 50ft or so to climb.
as mentioned in the recce section I intend on heading out this Saturday morning. Probably getting into edale at 9.45ish. Any company would be welcomed!
I might even give the down-and-up a go!
It's a good point. I very much doubt I have the ability or the energy to do it in the race but it's daft I haven't tried it. I won't be doing anymore full weekend reccies, but will try a midweek short training session, edale->RR->Grindslow Knoll (along edge) and then try the up-down.
Yeah, if I can get up there again before the race, I thought I'd run up Grindsbrook Clough and round to the Knoll fairly hard (to simulate the effect of a longish time out) and then do the round the edge route (timed) to Ringing Roger, jog back gently to the Knoll and try the down and up (also timed). That should be a worthwhile work-out and give a fairly good idea of the time difference...
I'm on the entry list but I won't now be able to run. Does anybody know what the situation is with regard to transfers? If transfers are possible does anybody want the place?
Planning on doing 2nd half with a club mate (Leeds Rhino) on Friday at a steady pace. He's going to show me the short-cuts! When I did the 2nd half at christmas, visibility was about 30m and I didn't fancy trying to find the route through the peat bogs.
I'm also hoping that it won't be as windy as when I did the first half last thursday.
You'll have to pay big money to Park in Edale, it's free in the layby! Best way from Leeds is to come off Junct 36 follow 616 come off at Stocksbridge at traffic light go quick right then left(only 30m) up hill down Ewden and up hill to Strines road turn left follow this till you pick up A57 between HPM cp Moscar and Cut throat bridge, easy from there. We could go a bit later but I need to do school run and pack for Kettlewell. If this sounds ok I'll PM you my Mob as You'll go straight past my house so you could follow me.
Any one know how the water stations work? Bottles, cups, bucket? Also is there enough to stop for a few seconds and have a good few drinks.
Thanks
Water in containers, cups, apply to mouth.
