Good news for West Yorkshire. I think Dewsbury Parkrun was due to kick off this morning. Did anyone do it?

Have you got shares in Park Run Danbert?

Keep up the good work Master - Yours is my favourite course of all the local parkruns.

Re: Are Park Runs Destructive
Popped down to London for the weekend to see the Diamond League athletics, and took in Wimbledon Common Park Run while I was down there. Fantastic little course, very friendly people and to be honest, it served the purpose of getting out for a training run perfectly. Couldn't see any races on while I was down there so it didn't take away from the local running economy.
I think these are brilliant, long may they continue. I do lots of fell races big & small each year, and only a handful of park runs. Most people I meet either do similar, or never race anyway so where's the harm?
And they get lots of folk out who otherwise wouldn't be doing very much exercise on a Saturday morning!!

Re: Are Park Runs Destructive
I have an occasional browse at the list of 'this weeks winners' on the Parkrun site and noticed that the winner in Glasgow this week was a certain Tom Owens....so if the likes of Tom (& of course CbT) benefit from them then they more than worth doing, that said I've only run 3 so far.
(as an aside CbT, Wimbledon Common was one of my Dad's old stomping grounds back in the mid-late 50's, along with Richmond Park)

Fact - 111 runners there last Saturday.
Fact - Burnley parkrun is actually doing really well and continues to attract new runners week on week.
Opinion - Anything that encourages people to get off there backsides and get fit has to be a good thing.

Re: Are Park Runs Destructive
PS - It's the 2nd anniversary at Oldham tomorrow. Why don't you come along for a run and a free bacon butty with us tomorrow multi coloured, you'd love it?

Faluja Singh, 101 years old, ran at Valentines Parkrun. And, did you know there is a Parkrun Show Podcast every week? Also to be found on Facebook.

I've been in Leeds since 1963 and I didn't have the faintest idea what "Miggy" was referring to. I thought it was some reference younger people would understand.

Alex, I suspect 'miggy' and 'mingy' and 'minging' are subtley different (but the youngsters can correct me).
I stopped-off at the A1(M) J60 Sedgefield Parkrun '9am service station' this morning on my way back home (Manchester) from Northumberland, and I can vouch for the fact that it was far-from miggy, mingy, or minging. In fact it was mingtastic. Thanks to the Sedgefield-crew for making me and the rest of the field so welcome. Fab orgaisation and enthusiasm. Loved the course, including the mini-hill (an off-road Woodbank). I must find an excuse to be passing again to bag a course PB! :w00t:.

Re: Are Park Runs Destructive
A big thanks to the Woodbank crew for the 3rd Anniversary run today - lots of great fancy dress participants and great cake afterwards.
We even managed to slot in nicely between the days rain showers. Those of you out tonight at Mario & Gianni's - buon appetito!

Re: Are Park Runs Destructive
A lovely sunny run at Woodbank today, even though my fingers nearly dropped off in the chilly morning air on the 45 minute cycle over.
Felt nice and relaxed and warmed up on the run, managing to do my best Woodbank time for over 2 years, and wasn't even flatout.
Maybe I should ditch the car and take the bike more often.
Does anyone else cycle to any parkruns, and if so do you find it's a good warm-up and good for your times? I'd be interested to know.
Seamless, faultless, organisation from the Woodbank crew of volunteers again, and super quick results. Cycled back home and logged on and they are up on the website already, way before noon! Wow. Beat that any morning fell race.
PS. I was just saying to some clubmates last week - I wonder how long it will be before a fell race trials a token-barcode system in the finish funnel? :closed:

It's coming OB1. It''s definitely the future.
I finally got round to doing Bramhall parkrun this morning and really enjoyed it. It was a scenic, multi-terrain, undulating course that had some very tight twists and turns.and an incredibly large field. To be honest there were probably too many runners for the size of the park and the paths within it. I've only got Marple left to do and then I''ll have completed all the Greater Manchester parkruns.

Danbert, glad you enjoyed Bramhall yesterday. I've only done it the once, and although I enjoyed it I haven't been back mainly because of the field-size, like you say.
We are now spoilt for choice for Parkruns around Manchester (M60-belt) so it's easy to pick and choose the event that best suits your mood on a given Saturday.
My mood tends to be a smaller field (100-200) closer to home, like Oldham, Woodbank, or Platts. Although I've done Heaton 40 times I haven't yet been this year!
I think you will enjoy Marple when you do it. Abit like Wythenshawe, Marple is more or less flat with a semi-XC feel (a fair amount on grass and dirt tracks as opposed to tarmac paths). In fact like Wythenshawe trail shoes are a good choice over normal trainers. It's not as fast as Platt Fields (mainly tarmac) but reasonably fast for the terrain.
OB1
PS - just got back from 2-hours on Bleaklow with John4of5, was alot slower pace than parkrun! 8 miles in 2 hours, with lots of exploring of groughs, wow-ing at various stone features and pools, and nattering with a few members of Woodhead MR out on a training day. Not sure why their ambulance was parked for several hours blocking the turning circle of a normal car at the top of the Woodhead tunnel parking layby (by the 'no parking' sign as you try and turn back onto the A628 - a tight turn) - seemed a safety hazard to me...

.....6 months on, I ran Dewsbury last Sat...en route from Leeds to Royston Vasey. Very low-key with just 25 runners but still happy with an age group 1st place! :)
News from Leeds - Temple Newsam parkrun starts 26 Jan.....https://www.facebook.com/templenewsamparkrun?group_id=0

Dewsbury sounds lovely - especially compared to the Leeds Parkrun on Woodhouse Moor, which is IMO far too congested these days. Good news about Temple Newsam. I thought the next Leeds Parkrun was to be in Middleton Park, but Temple Newsam will be nicer.

I'm bloody injured. I'm always injured or in-between injuries these days. That said, i reckon Worsley is my favourite parkrun. The crowd who turn up there every Saturday morning are deeply indebted to yourself and Duncan and the rest of the organising team who give up your time to offer your services. You're a good man

Re: Are Park Runs Destructive
Cor blimey, Platt Fields was wet this morning with ponds galore swallowing up whole shoes and at one point half a human. Nice to be back in front of the fire drying out.
-
Re: Are Park Runs Destructive
Agree about Leeds being to busy. Last time I did it someone lost a shoe, someone else fell over and there was much pushing and shoving going on. Looking forward to trying Temple Newsam and I am going to try and get down forthe first run.

Platt Fields is unbelievable. It has been bad all year but now it is just ridiculous.
Alexandra Park which is less than a mile from Platt Fields would make a much better course. It is 3 laps and is permanently marked: http://www.openathletics.org/uploads...inal_small.pdf
At the moment it is used on the first Sunday of the month for a Women Only 5K and attracts less than 10 runners!

Why don't we all try it out on New Year's Day - unofficially of course?
-
Re: Are Park Runs Destructive
I ran Alex Park one Sunday 2 years ago (when it was still a mixed 5k) and even mixed there were only about 40 runners, and 10 of those were Gloss as it was the 'joker' in our club champs that year. It is still my 5k PB park course ahead of Platt Fields. What sticks out in my memory is that the post-run refreshments was a supermarket trolley full of bananas, courtesy of the ladies who run 'Friends of Alex Park' or summut like that.

I'd be up for this. I take it you are volunteering as Course Director and sponsor, Swoop? Dont forget the bananas.
PS. I am sure I can persuade TimothyDaltonmyarse, as he's gagging for a sub-20 again and a 70%er now that he's back to fighting weight.
A flat dry course is just what he needs. Platt Fields just cant deliver on the 'dry' part right now.
He's whopping me right now, although I seem to recall I was a smidging ahead of him on that run at Alex Park 2 years ago.
