Just wanted to add my thanks to the organisers for a very well run race. The first fell race that I have 'raced' and much was learned. Not least that it is normal to feel like its time to give up before you get to half way and that most of the rest of the field are feeling the same - so ignore it and carry on!
Apologies to the guy I ran 2 yards behind the whole way across to Brown Knoll. I just couldn't muster the energy to go past. I was wondering at one point if you can be disqualified for drafting in Fell Races but then can you draft at 9 min miling across a bog?
Thanks to the guy with the water on Brown Knoll - much appreciated!
Just managed to break 3.40 despite the fact someone seemed to have double the length of path on Ringing Roger from going up it at the start to coming down it at the end!!!
Just got me Mars bar out of bumbag......think it turned into a gel yesterday.............
Cracking day out!! thanks to the organisers and helpers!! those cow bells gave it a real alpine feel!
Absolutely top day out, thanks to all concerned! Fab views and great people.
I think that might have been me, and no need to apologize. I should apologize to you actually for the backward glance of irritation, which I can only explain was the result of too much sun. Good race
Now there is a scam I had two posh gels that cost £1 each and a pack of Aldi Mars bar copies (Titan bars - somebody at Aldi knows their Greek Gods or is it Roman:) - I don't) They are less than 15 pence each, about 2/3 the size of a mars bar and have more calories than the gels!!
Awesome day.
A big thank you to:
1. The race organisers and marshalls for a superb day.
2. Each of the people I had the pleasure of running alongside at various steps of the way.
3. My girlfriend who, despite several pleas not to bother and many better offers to go do her own thing, dutifully walked up Jacobs ladder with a bottle of drink (and my brother for bailing out last minute thus enabling me to have the full bottle and not sharing). I dread to think what state I'd have been in if she hadn't.
4. Every single one of the people who overtook me between Wool Packs and home and checked upon my wellbeing or provided encouragement as the wheels came well and truly off the wagon - I quite like the suggestion "have I tried running on my hands"!:D
5. The bloke who was doing a reverse sweep from RR with a bottle of water and cake.
6. The chap in the final 100m who graciously let me keep my position.
7. My kidneys and their salt retaining capabiliities.
And many apologies to that chap who followed me on the wrong line off Grindsbrk clough - most times one would be right in thinking someone in local vest colour ought to know where they were running.
Just off to find some threads on fluid replacement for hot days..........
Rescue Ale went some of the way to restoring body physiology.
Some photo's of the first few runners on the final decent

Great photos Glen. I am impressed by how strong the runners appear to look.

or it will be soon...
'tis John Dalton who should take all the credit for rapid production of results. He's the reason that DPFR has such an amazing website and on the day used software he wrote for his own hathersage race. I think if there was internet at the village hall he could produce them online in realtime!
Thanks to all on here for your kind words for the Marshals and helpers, they did all do a great job! Glad everyone enjoyed the race, I did too.
I've updated the pages at http://www.dpfr.org.uk/pages/3 with a short report. I'd welcome specific feedback (good and bad) to skyline (at) dpfr.org.uk
Just as a note.... I came across a prediction for how long it would take me to get around Skyline so Lynne knew approximately when I would get around to her... as it turns out, it was pretty bang on. Does anyone else make approximations before races? I've never done it before and was surprised at the accuracy.
(after I wrote out the table I forgot about it until I came across it just now, so I wasn't actually following timings in any way, shape or form), thought you might be interested....

I do this kind of thing for most races
if I've never done the race before, I look at the previous year's results and (knowing roughly how far down the field I tend to finish at different distance/severity races) I pick out a rough time (usually a bit higher, to give me a tough target!)
I then map the route, split it into sections (usually ups, downs and flats), estimate my time for each section, then tweak them so they come out totalling what I expect/target
I write the splits on a small piece of paper and glance at them on the way round to help with pacing
they're usually pretty accurate
then I've got actual/personal splits to review/tweak/revise downwards to provide an improved target for future year(s)...

Great video. I wasn't there but intend to be next year after all the positive feedback... if you guarantee the conditions seen here...
Even more frustrating than not being there, Carl put in three impossibly quick legs in the annual club relay event the day before, and passed me and everyone else from the back in the main fell leg. Taking a blatantly illegal shortcut through a wall in the Howgills didn't get me anywhere near, and I dread to think what he could do if he prepared for these races in a 'proper' manner. Hope you read this Mr Bell...

Was it "Tommie needs an ice cream"?
i feel it's only fair to warn you what it could be like...
this is the infamous 2007 "you had to be there" race
check it out from about 2.10, the runner in shot staggering up the hill looking like 5k runner reaching the end of marathon was the eventual race winner Lloyd Taggart, the reason there wasn't any thing else filmed from this location is the camera man Jim despite being sat down kept getting blown over so he crawled off the hill.......

I echo thanks to all who made it happen so smoothly. I even made it back in time for the hot food and all the presentations this time (unlike the Trigger!)
I usually have a target beforehand (even the first time I run a particular race) but rarely have split predictions. I am more of a post-race analysis type.
On that note, just taking random 10 other folk (spread right across the field) who ran both the Kinder Trog (June 2011) and the ES (Mar 2012) and ratioing their times in minutes. Gives a range of ES:KT ratios between 1.46 (Compo) and 1.62 (Zephr and Dynamo Dan) with a mean of 1.56 and median of 1.57. My own ratio is a high outlier 1.64 despite me being equally fit for both. To equal the mean ratio I would have had to have been 15 mins quicker in the ES, which would have been 5 mins inside my target. I wasn't pushing too hard on ES but I do think I lost most of the 15 mins on Kinder edge, mainly due to not having trained for the distance beyond 16 mikes. My weekend long runs tend to be KT distances (3 hr runs) rather than 4hr+. Even so I gained a few places after Brown Knoll and lost fewer on Kinder Edge, so I think I paced myself OK compared to most of those around me at that point. I descended the last 1 km from Kinder edge quicker than the folk I was with by then, being 3 mins quicker than one of them. Of all the sections the climb up Lose hill was the one where I seemed to lose ground / places, but regaining most if not all by Brown Knoll.
So, I think my ES target will probably stay the same for next time, and I'll try and rest (not Parkrun!) the day before, and up my long training runs to 4hr+
It was folk like Rob Taylor who astounded me Sunday, starting slowly and seemingly overtaking half of the field after Win Hill. We were together on the Roman Road and he was only 2 minutes ahead at Win hill, but 50 mins ahead by the finish! Talk about steady acceleration.
Good video, i even made it in even though i did not run (in the background up the hill from the finish, red shirt!). My 2 little ones (3 and 5) make a star appearance running past the 3rd placed guy at the finish. They ran all they way up to see me near the gate!
Eventually got round to uploading my photos taken at the top of the first climb to Ringing Roger - everyone looking nice and fresh!
For all runners of this years Edaledale Skyline, the Dark Peak website has new selection of photo's loaded up of runners on Rushup Edge.
Wow, that video of the 2007 race is mad!!!! Blooming heck!! You had to be seriously good to of finished that. Amazing footage. The camera guy deserves a medal :-)
No he doesn't, he's lightweight retiring to Edale as soon as he'd beeen blown over a few times:rolleyes: now the marshalls who were out all day....
Esp that cheerful chap on Grindslow Knoll.........I forget his name.....;)
Every one had a tough time that day. esp Loxley Lad(I think it was him) et al at the top of Jacobs ladder where most of the runners who were rescued were sheltering.
New FB event page for next year.

Can a mod change the Title to Edale Skyline Fell and take the date off please
At the risk of starting the Edale Skyline Fell Race Frenzy before Christmas I thought I'd let folk know that entries for the 2013 race will open towards the end of January. It will certainly be online entry and most likely through SportIdent.
As the 'official worst kept secret in fell running' the exact date that entries will be confirmed, on't @edaleskyline on twitter and at https://www.facebook.com/EdaleSkylineFellRace at http://www.dpfr.org.uk/pages/3 and i'm sure even here too ;-)
Please spread the word as it really is quite irritating to get countless emails asking when entries open...
like I did last year I'll keep a good few places back for 'contenders' - as I'm a firm believer that the competitive element of the event should be a race over the fells rather than a race to download a form of the internet and post it through my door!
Substitutions will be allowed (encouraged in fact!) for a few extra pounds which, as last year, will go straight to Edale MRT - we gave them £750 last year. All proceeds from the race will be given to local charities (last year approx £1600)
There will be more detailed information on the above dpfr website once I've actually written it. But expect vetting for suitable experience and very robust kit requirements and (thanks to IDP) pre-race checking, followed by a cracking tough race and some of Kevs legendary stew.
let the general over-excitement commence....
What a sensible approach to race organisation. I will be linking to this post when we have yet another forum discussion about people who can't register for full events despite people not turning up on the day. :)
I hope it's another good champs race. Will anyone beat Lloyd this time?
