My training diary
Hi all,
Before the great forum crash of January 2007, I used to put my training in a thread of its own because it helped to motivate me and I actually got quite fit.
I'm trying to get fit again, so I'm going to do it again. I know it's really self-indulgent and although anyone is free to have a look in here, it's more for my own benefit by shaming me into action!
Anyway, 4 mile run today on road and trail (29:27)
Mile 1 - 7:32
Mile 2 - 7:46
Mile 3 - 7:49 (steep uphill)
Mile 4 - 6:21 (mainly downhill)
It's a start!

Re: Self-indulgent training di
Yes that is quite self indulgent isnt it. I can just imagine that you were eating magnum ice creams (not from a multi pack) and getting fanned by 3 good looking women as you wrote this.
Woops, have I just hijacked your thread! :D

Have you been spying on me? ;)
4.4 miles today in 35:09. Depressing when I used to be able to do nearly 7 in that time :(

Wow that is one hell of a decline.7 mile in 35 is quick. As you are still in your twenties, you have either doubled your weight or had serious injuries. You have to have a fair bit of natural ability to get to that original level....
good luck along the comeback trail ;)

Probably closer to 6.5 miles than 7 to be honest
I am still in my twenties (28) but I'm 3.5 stone (35%) heavier than I was when I was racing. Unfortunately I have a dodgy back that caused me to pack it in 2003 and it limits the amount of training I can do now without it getting sore, and I definitely can't run up steep hills!
I was never one for massive mileage and used to tick over at 35-40 miles per week, so if I can get up to that and my 5km time down to under 17 I'll be happy. My days of running PBs have long gone!

Yah, but the only way is up for you now! Injuries permitting.
You've got the great days of running PBs every time you race ahead of you ;)

Re: Self-indulgent training di
Good luck with the thread and the training, mate
Although I have been a runner for almost 30 years, a couple of years ago I was just doing a few easy miles per day and hadn’t raced for over a year. I made a snap decision to enter a local 5 km and was shocked when I didn’t break 20 mins.
It lit the spark however, and I returned to competitive training and reduced the time by more than 90 seconds in 5 months.

Great stuff mate! You don't realise how unfit you become when you're not running (or running competitively) do you!?
I tried a comeback (until my back got injured again) in 2007 and did two 5km races. I got down to about 19:13 or something off about about 2 months training so that's my first goal this year, and then hopefully dip below 18 by the end of 2009.

Re: Self-indulgent training di
5.2 miles in 41:42 today. Was quite a hilly run and felt quite good

:D NB do not put yourself down. Anyone who goes out and does it is doing well. And as TheHeathens says the only way is up ;) I am STILL getting PBs on 10k races, because I improve so bloody slowly I shave off a few seconds each time... "I might be slow but I am 23 seconds quicker than last year"!

Re: Self-indulgent training di
NB, also, have you noticed, all these super-fast folks are always injured or trying to recover from injury, is it worth it, I say not! Just enjoy yourself and like OHW says, you will improve hugely if you keep at it. My first 5k on a treadmill (aagh) took 40 minutes and I was nearly sick. Now I'm looking forward to a "good" time at the Windermere marathon in 2 weeks time (eek). Sorry about hijacking your thread Heathens, did you train today?
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
I don't want to tempt faith Behind You, but its not all runners who are injured or coming back from injuries. With the right balance of training, racing and on-going physio as a presentative measure some of us manage to race ok with no injuries. So I would say it is worth it.
I would also add that NVB should be held up as a positive role model to anyone wanting to go running. Running is free. The parks, the roads and the moors are free to run on. You just need a good pair of trainers and determination.

Re: Self-indulgent training di
Yes spot on
Well done Nirvana;)

Re: Self-indulgent training di
Did 4.82 miles today. Wanted to do the first 3 fast (relatively!) as I'm running a 5km in a few weeks. I took it easy on the 4th mile and sped up a little on the last 0.82 miles:
Mile 1 : 7:12
Mile 2 : 7:01
Mile 3 : 6:46
Mile 4 : 8:03
Mile 5 : 5:49 (7:05 pace)
Total : 34:50 (7:14 pace)
Relatively happy with that - long way to go yet!
By the way, all feel free to hijack the thread. I'm using it to motivate myself, but there's no reason why other people shouldn't be motivated too!

Its a slow process that is for sure, but like you, i have last years record to fall back on and i couldn't even walk 100 yards without getting tired, since Feb this year i have lost 18lb in weight, lots more to go, and i can actually go running on my own in Heaton Park, and although i still feel abit silly doing so, i just smile at anyone who looks at me.
I doubt you are slow...

Re: Self-indulgent training di
Did a hilly (at Werneth Low) 8.93 miles today in 1:15:18.
Mile 1 - 8:16
Mile 2 - 8:35
Mile 3 - 8:44
Mile 4 - 9:35
Mile 5 - 8:13
Mile 6 - 8:18
Mile 7 - 8:04
Mile 8 - 8:09
Mile 9 - 7:23 (0.93 miles - 7:57 pace)
Longest run in over 2 years and first 4 miles were completely uphill (from my house to Werneth Low). I'm contemplating going down to Altrincham and doing my first session in 2 years on Tuesday.

Re: Self-indulgent training di
Did 24 x 200m at Altrincham on Tuesday.
First 4 had 45 secs recovery
Second 4 had 40 secs recovery
Third 4 had 35 secs recovery
Fourth 4 had 30 secs recovery
Fifth 4 had 25 secs recovery
Sixth 4 had 20 secs recovery
Did each of them in about 42 and none of them slower than 44 so fairly happy with the sesssion as was the first for two years.

How has the last couple of weeks gone?
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
Only done 2 runs - work and child have prevented me from getting any more out.
I'm gonna be running tomorrow though
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
Did 25 mins on a X-Trainer yesterday and did 4.6 miles in 37:42 today.
Felt like turning back after 5 mins but carried on to the end.
I'm going to try and do the Hellrunner race in Delemere Forest in November so that's my target.
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
5.18 miles today in 38:24 - fairly flat around the lovely  streets of Denton.
Mile 1 - 7:32
Mile 2 - 15:11 (7:39)
Mile 3 - 23:02 (7:51)
Mile 4 - 30:28 (7:26)
Mile 5 - 37:17 (6:49)
0.18 miles - 38:24 (6:19)
First time I've run this late at night for years; I've remembered I prefer running at night - less traffic and heat and I think I'm biologically programmed to be a night owl!
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
Did 8x400m on Tuesday at Altrincham track - averaged about 76/77

No, entries filled up and no entries on the day unfortunately.
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
Did 6 miles yesterday morning with Dave Norman - nothing too quick but was all off-road on trails
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
Did a hilly 5.58 miles today in 42:05 (7:33 pace):
Mile 1 - 6:57
Mile 2 - 14:43 (7:46)
Mile 3 - 23:24 (8:41 - uphill for the whole mile)
Mile 4 - 31:17 (7:53)
Mile 5 - 37:59 (6:42 - what goes up must come down ;))
Mile 6 - 42:05 (4:06 for 0.58 miles - 7:05 pace)
Felt quite good, didn't go too hard but back was OK and felt like I was flowing a little. Half of the run was on trails and half on the road (round Woodley) but from 2.5 miles to 4 miles, it was all uphill.
Still, was a good feeling running past the cyclists!

Re: Self-indulgent training di
Hi,
I am not trying to criticise here, but I was wondering if you have a philosophy and or plan, or if you simply do what you want when you want.
There are not too many days training listed here, and perhaps there are other days that do not make the news. I can see the benefit of the steady runs, but I get a little confused with the odd 24 x 200m or 8 x 400m that sporadically appear.
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
At the moment, I'm concentrating on building up my aerobic base and losing weight.
I do interval training with Altrincham on Tuesday nights (which is the best way of losing weight) and my steady runs are on an ad-hoc basis when work / child commitments allow me the time.
I'm probably running 4 times a week at the moment which after about 3 weeks, I'll increase to 5 times a week.
Once I start getting some base fitness back and the weight comes off, I'll start structuring it (probably about August) with the Hellrunner race in November as the target. I've got a Sports Science degree so I'm pretty good at devising a training schedule once I get up to the required level to actually carry it out!
I want to be getting to 18 minute 5km pace so I can kick on from there.
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
Did a session with Altrincham at John Leigh Park:
4 sets of:
1 x 30s hill rep
1 x 90s effort
1 x 30s hill rep
1 x 3 min 30s effort.
Felt a bit drained from the run last night but happy with my speed on the hill reps.
-
Re: Self-indulgent training di
Thanks for the insight into your ideas.
I must admit that there are times on club night that I do things that do not necessarily fit into the Master plan, but it’s a good sociable time.

Did this run the other way round today in 27:37. Mile Splits are in red above.
Felt quite good until the last mile and started getting a sore quad and hamstring on my right leg. Still, 1:50 improvement in a few months isn't bad.

Looking at doing 6/7 miles in the morning with Bisto

Re: Self-indulgent training di
Really really didn't want to go for a run this morning but forced myself to go out for at least 5 minutes to see how I felt. If I felt rubbish after 5 mins, I said I'd turn back.
Well, I felt crap for 5 minutes but decided to carry on and ended up doing a relaxed 6.5 miles in 54:28. Took it dead easy and treated it as a recovery run:
Mile Splits:
8:45
8:34 (17:20)
8:17 (25:37)
8:41 (34:18)
8:05 (42:25)
8:02 (50:28)
4:00 (54:28)
