However as a better commentator than me has written: whereas the Giro has always been a proper bike race (and so its organisers have kept going broke) the Tour has always been first and foremost a business: and it suits ASO for foreign riders to win because of the television rights revenues a foreign winner brings.

As for my mate Contador: well he is the outstanding rider of this generation but like any winner he has to have the form at the right time and not fall off his bike.
