    I hope everyone is o.k.

Is it just me or is it annoying that they keep on saying "still out on that mountain". They - the reporters - seam totally unaware that this is a tough race going over many mountains. If it was 1 mountain they would all have been rounded up by now.

Hind sight is a wonderful thing.

Yes he is local and thats appears to be the extent of his credentials apart from trying to promote his own business.

On the media coverage - very good report on Radio 4 a couple of minutes ago, talking to a runner called Martin (?) from Ilkley who'd had a good run on Saturday, made overnight camp ok, and was able to make the points that others here have been making about individual choice, the requirement to take all kit to be self sufficient etc - and not a peep from the mine owner!

Mind you - our runner was a bit worried about his car being stuck in the flood - and the reporter had a recording of the rain on the roof of his car last night which sounded alarming!

    I hope everyone is fine!

It annoys me when the organisers of these races get targeted. They can't win either way, if they had cancelled the race then they would never have heard the last of it from a select bunch of selfish runners and now they will be critisised for letting it go ahead by the media.

I heard this "LOCAL" on the news this morning and just thought "What an ar5e!", needless to say I'll not go anywhere near his shop/cafe again in the future.

As has been repeatedly said, even on this thread by fell runners themselves, this has NOTHING to do with hindsight. There was serious flooding in the area on Thursday, yet more rain on Friday, and the forecast for Saturday was for torrential rain. Nobody is being wise after the fact in saying the race should have been called off...foresight was all that was required to see that what was likely to happen is what, in fact, did happen. This is not to pass judgement on decisions that were made, but it is to dispel the wrong notion that those commenting are relying on hindsight to justify their viewpoint. They are not.

Good news dylan. My thoughts are with anyone waiting for news of folks who were out yesterday and who are not home yet and those who were out there themselves

I think you miss the point. A good race organiser is not trying "to win either way" by satisfying the selfish needs of one community or another (even a community that I am part of.) He or she is simply trying to execute a job professionally.

That means: a), getting people to and from the start. b). ensuring participants have a good, generally safe, time during the race (that the event is "well run". and c). ensuring where possible the race is conducted self-sufficiently (without needing mass support from the emergency services and/or any other external agency.) To achieve this, as a general rule you take into account whether participants are qualified, the state of access roads and the terrain in general, the quality and state of the course itself, and things like the weather forecast, etc.

I think you can argue that given a). there were huge problems with access to the area 24 hours before the race (which left the organisers asking people not to show up early as the main site was unprepared until very late in the day), b). the race course itself was, while safe, teetering on the edge of danger (should there be any more rain, which it was widely predicted there would be) and c). in the event, a huge demand was placed on Mountain Rescue and a number of other services (local hospitals, etc.) I can't see who else you can target when it comes to taking responsibility except the organisers.

They are great people who've done a brilliant job running this event for a number of years but let's front up, they made a really poor call this weekend (in my opinion.) Just because I am a selfish, self-interested runner doesn't mean I am not capable of seeing this.

I think you have made your point now - and how does targeting the organisers help? Isn't blame wonderful?

The decision to abandon the race has to be taken by the participants or by the race organisers only.

You were not at this event and therefore you cannot make an informed decision that the race should have been cancelled. A bad weather forecast is not a reason to cancel the OMM.
