    Re: The Ben Race

I think I remember asking this last year but I'm not sure if we ever got a clear answer - as most of us residing in a place called England seem to be members of English Athletics do we or do we not have to pay the additional levy that was asked for on the entry form last year? or does some reciprocal agreement exist between English Athletics and the Scots version (or was it UK athletics)? I paid it anyway to be on the safe side, and I would rather do that than risk having my entry delayed or rejected but does anyone know the answer please?

Thanks Marvin . I had confirmation earlier from the organisers that FRA membership is OK . Good . Just got to jostle for position in the "race" to get a place .

I think we are talking about different things - FRA membership seems fine as club membership for entry to the race but I think last year there was a levy on the entry fee for runners who were not members of UK athletics - I know most FRA/fell club members have English Athletics membership as part of that, does this qualify as UK athletics membership or is it something else again?

Sorry , I don't know the answer to that . I'm just glad I don't have to join a club for the sake of one race .

The situation for Scottish runners is that you need to have individual membership of Scottish Athletics/(UKA?) to avoid paying the levy. It does not matter if you are a member of a club affiliated to Scottish Athletics, its only the individual membership that matters.

So last year I did not pay the levy as I had SA individual membership but some of my club mates would have paid the levy as although they were members of an SA affiliated club they did not have individual membership.

I have SA individual membership as I run the occasional 10k and some cross-country. If you only run in the hills no point in having it as most hill races don't use SA insurance, a requirement of which is the levy.

Thanks - I think I'll just pay the full amount to try and avoid any problems, its not worth reducing the chances of a place by causing any delay or query.

I agree, but it's an expensive race these days. I'm sure I only paid £11 quid a couple of years ago (and I got a free buff)

My understanding is that you would be ok if you are an individual member of England Athletics, but as suggested it would be best to double check this with the organisers.

The last thing I want to do is to hijack this thread with a discussion of scottish hillrunning, but John, I cant let you get away with this:

About 75% of hillraces in the SHR calendar DO use SA insurance, so there's plenty of point in joining SA.
