    Re: Three Shires

Enjoyed the day, but it was a bit of drama for me .... was late getting there, parked at Tilberthwaite and ran to Little Langdale, obviously the delayed start made that a bit of wasted effort! Recent recces helped and I got some good lines down off Swirl How and down Wetside Edge, but took a terrific fall in the boggy bit before the road crossing - no damage done but I was truly plastered in the mucky stuff Hit the cut-off in about 1:30 and was slowly picking up pace as we dropped down off Blisco, but unfortunately I slipped on some wet rock and took a really nasty fall, which laid my shin open to the bone. A slow descent down to Blea Tarn and most of the bleeding had stopped by then so I decided to crack on and finish the race, I would like to apologise to anyone who heard me swearing and cursing, I was a bit mad with myself. Think I finished around 3:10(ish), so am a bit fed-up, am sure I could have dipped under 3 hours had it not been for this slight impediment. I was one of the "walking wounded" at end, I'm very grateful to the kind St Johns folks who patched me up.

I had the pleasure of some neat TCP squirted into the hole by a friend (a doctor) before I set off for home, then sat for 5 hours in A & E before getting home around 0200 with an even bigger hole in my leg. They x-rayed it and found some bits of cumbrian fell under the skin, so cut all the jagged edges of skin off then scrubbed it out, quite character-building I thought. Feel like I've been steam-rollered today and have a codeine-hangover from all the painkillers I was given, but no real harm done, most of the swelling has gone down. Think Whernside next Saturday is out of the question though.

I was wearing mudclaw 272s, don't think they're better or worse than anything else on wet rock. They might be a bit worn down though, perhaps I should have pulled a new pair out for this, it was very wet.

Nothing's much good on wet, greasy rock except for maybe woolly socks over boots!!

Sounds like a bit of an adventure! Bad luck with the fall. I was very cautious with the descents. I saw a few people at the end with blood trailing down shins. Very easily done in those conditions.

Well what a fantastic day for it!! I'm so grateful to the organisers for going to all that extra effort with the parking etc, to make sure the event went ahead. Favourite race of the year for me, so I reallt appreciate it been on when plans have to change late in the day.

A touch damp underfoot but I managed not to fall. Did go waist deep in a puddle at one point though!! Lightfoot & Bell passed and re-passed us 4 or 5 times before Ricky dropped out, and Carl decided on a tactical vest to follow! Great race with the front few chopping and changing all the time. First few all within a couple of minutes of each other were:

    1: Carl Bell (Howgill)
    2: John Helme (Ambleside)
    3: Tom Brunt (Holmfirth)
    4: Mark Roberts (Borrowdale)
    5: Sam Tosh (Rossendale)
    6: Darren Holloway (Pennine)
    7: Dave Wilby (Ilkley)
    8: Steve Birkinshaw (Borrowdale)

Ouch Martyn, sounds like a lot of stress there, and you'll probably have a hard-as-nails scar to scare curious children with. Bloody good effort to finish after that. Happy healing!

Managed to make it round yesterday but much slower than last year. Did stop for a second though to get a quick photo of the view from Wetherlam...

Just reading off the Clayton forums, looks like another runner had a bad fall resulting in a broken bone.

Hope to a swift return to health!
