I managed with a 10L sacks. But there was a kit check half way round where they checked everything, so I had to unpack the whole thing - it took a while getting it packed again. Next time I'll take something a bit bigger.

Yep I also manage with a 10l sac and yes the kit check half way round meant the sac had to be packed again but no worries, it will be 10l again fo me next year:thumbup:
Ok, next newbie question!
Longest long run? - do I go for time or distance and what should it be?
I'm looking at getting up to 20m/4hrs then alternating that with some back to back shorter runs on consecutive days; maybe 3h then2h.
I'm still doing my 90min hill session and a couple of gym sessions for core strength.
What do you guys think?

What time are you looking to get round in? We always get some long jog/walk type of days in, at least a couple a month, of at least Y3P distance. We also sometimes do the Y3Ps, and chuck Gragareth in for good measure.
It's also a good idea to get used to being on the hill in all weathers for long periods, regardless of speed. That way you get mentally prepared as well, used to the rough terrain and so on. Lots of the Fellsman is about mental attitude..!
My longest run was Gragareth, Whernside, Pen y Ghent and Ingleborough from Ingleton when I was training to do the fellsman first time. I guess thats something like 30 miles and I can still remember my wheels well and truly falling off as I reached Horton still with the hack up Inglebororough and back down to Ingleton to go. It may have taken 6.5 to 7 hours, I can't remember now, but to be honest time on your feet is probably the best preparation anyway
I know that route well Stolly, although we usually do it as the three peaks, but with Gragareth squeezed in between Whernside and Ingleborough. It takes me a lot longer than 7 hours, mind!
I've never been a heavy trainer but wouldn't look at doing the Fellsman off nothing longer than 20miles / 4hrs
Obviously training runs / events would be a run round the Three Peaks, Haworth Hobble and the Calderdale Hike (might be too close now, date-wise for the actual event). I'd be looking to do at least one 25miles / 5hr run per month between now and the event if I was you. LDWA events make great training runs

I haven't really looked at Target times, would be happy to avoid a dnf!
I've been doing the long runs at around 12 minute miles. That, combined with walking up any hills would perhaps get me round in 15 hours but I suspect that's a bit ambitious.
I always knew that the fellsman would be a mental discipline as much as physical. Bad weather doesn't bother me, I do better in pissing rain than hot sun so conditions shouldn't't be an issue. It all hinges on getting the miles in without injuring myself; that's what the gym sessions are about, hopefully!

One thing to have in mind is the Hobble is very runnable. I've run under 6hours and it's 32miles. The Fellsman is different (I can't say I've done it but know enough folk who have, and enough about it). I'd be delighted with sub-17hours if and when I do it
The Hobble is a run with some walking but I suspect the Fellsman is a run / walk, or walk with some running (especially as time passes) for many folk who do it
