He was a bitter, rude, graceless, humourless bully with a vile temper who had an open and unrelenting contempt for referees.
There is no doubt however that his overbearing attitude did work in United's favour.
The record shows that in soccer's peculiarly imprecise manner of timekeeping, referees added more time to the end of games in which United were trailing than they did for any other club.'
