Am thinking of entering this as my first fell race, can anyone tell me if this is a beginner friendly race?

If you've got decent stamina and are happy in nasty weather then I'd say it'd be OK for a first race.
I did it as my first fell race, and didn't come last![]()
http://fellrunner.org.uk/races.php?id=3244 There's some info about it there Rachel.
It's a great route, not too hard and navigation wise plenty of people to follow. If you are comfortable running 10 miles over rough ground up and down hills in possible bad weather as Paul mentioned then enter and enjoy it! It's a cracking route and good fun!
Thanks guys, well I run off road most of the time, have done the Yorkshireman half Mara, a couple of the ldwa events in the Yorkshire dales and moors and can comfortably navigate, have done a couple of training runs over stanage and derwent edge in foul weather, just never quite plucked up the courage to enter a fell race so feel ready to take the plunge, and hey, if I come last, well someone has to.
im thinking about recce'ing the route on 11th so hopefully that will make me feel more confident

I think you've got more than enough experience to do this and I doubt you'll be last.
If you're pushed for reccy time, concentrate on the route from the trough checkpoint to Houndkirk Hill then onwards to the Fell Gate, these come late in the race and the field are well spread out by then. Sometimes you can lose touch with the runner in front here.
Just after CP10, the bridge at Houndkirk Road, you'd assume that you need to follow the green path (on the OS map) but there's a sheep trod to your right, soon after you turn at C10. The trod is a much more direct route to the fell gate. Keep an eye out for that, some people miss it and end up going the long way round.
The route from the Oxstones to the next checkpoint can be hard to find if you're reccying on your own, but on race day you can safely follow the crowd.
Thats brilliant info, thank you, I have decided I am definitely going to enter, I'll be the billy no mates on my own, so please feel free to say hi if any of you are going
I had a bit of a recce today. Going by my performance it'll be me that's last! :-)
Question: What's the "best" route onto and, more importantly, off Houndkirk Hill? I missed the path onto it today (but can see it on Google Earth). However, not too sure of best way forward after making the hill.
Any suggestions?
