I think they see themselves like Slovakia: they want to be independent of big brother next door, but still a member of the community of small nations in Europe.

Actually the analogy goes further: Slovakia has more and bigger mountains than the Czech Republic (like Scotland has, relative to England); Slovakia is more sparsely populated than the Czech Republic; the Slovaks speak a language which is just about mutually intelligible with Czech.
