i totally disagree that an english championship fell race can be FULL BEFORE THE FRA CALENDAR HAS LANDED ON MY DOORSTEP. It makes a mockery of the calendar.
i have persuaded two people to join the FRA in recent weeks from my area and last night they was talking about how good the calendar was, bear in mind they are not on the computer , i just said yes the calendar is good but some of the races may be already full

the reply was ive only just recieved the calendar

I think we'll see that more and more. Especially as race fees increase.

Look at the success of the Highland Fling, nice, low key, cheap. I know the WHW is well organised but it's over £60 quid more when in fact you get less logistical help, OK you get a nice top and goodies and a nice crystal goblet, but I do think £75 is a lot. TDMB is £100 and you get fed along the way, bags dropped off and transported back if you drop out.

DarK Peak already do this, The Winter series is organised by someone picking an empty date in the calender and setting a course (6-10 miles) giving a brief out line of a course and a time to meet, often self timed. The good thing about this is if some one can't make the Saturday they will run on sunday and submit a time later. Penistone, Barnsley and Totley runners often join in and occasionally even the odd Pennine runner makes a raid .

Wonder how many dissapointed runners (runner who did'nt get in) would turn up a week after the actually race and run the impromptu race.

There seem to be a relatively small number of oversubscribed races, either regularly or only when they are championship events.

Would it not be possible for these events to have more stringent entry qualifications such as a larger number of previous events completed or, as in the UT de Mont Blanc, the requirement to accumulate qualification points by having completed races from a specific list? Any unfilled places could then be opened up to all comers a short time before the event.

This might reduce the number of what may be thought of as 'speculative' entries and should have the benefit of boosting numbers in events which currently struggle to be financially viable. The downside is, of course, a more complex system for organisers to administer.

I write as someone lucky enough to spot the 'entries open' in time but who feels for the regulars who have been excluded.

    Just a thought.
If the course is flagged from Thursday to Tuesday at is suggests on the 3 peaks site.

Why not have a race Friday, one Saturday and one Sunday.

It this just too simple or too silly???

    Trevor,

I can understand the sentiments behind an 'unofficial race' but it states on the 3 peaks web site :

The course will be the same as the 2007 race but the route will be fully flagged from Thurs 24th April. However any training in the area before the 24th April must be restricted to the normal 3 Peaks walking route. Competitors are required to follow the fully marked taped or flagged route throughout. These special arrangements apply only on race day. At other times please keep to recognised paths and rights of way, follow the Country Code, keep dogs under control, use gates and stiles, do not harm farm animals and PLEASE TAKE YOUR LITTER HOME !

As in previous years parts of the race route are negotiated with local farmers and don't follow the normal right-of-way 3 peaks route.

Nothing to stop an unofficial race on another day if the rights-of-way are kept to but we wouldn't want to undo any of the good work done by the 3 peaks committee.

    Cheers, Ali

I quite agree Daz. To have a 2008 English championship race closed to further entries weeks before the 2008 calendar is published is just nonsense.

Mudlugger don't feel guilty - give me your number and your guilt will vanish.

Sorry Ali, I did not make the point clear. I was suggesting more than 1 official races. Maybe Ladies Sat and Lads Sun etc.
