That's really interesting, cheers Lola. I worked in Cusco, Peru and the locals there use it a lot when they have stomach problems. Always wondered whether there was any proven benefits. I met one woman who used to boil it up and drink it warm...yuk. (There is a group of people in Chiapas state in Mexico that use it to induce them to burp as part of a religious ceremony - wierd and very funny).
It is not the cola part of it that has the medicinal qualities, it is the Coca part... Coca leaves are very good to chew against altitude sickness too! It definitely settles the stomach as well... I hate the stuff though, only ever have taken it in for medicinal purposes :D
The other thing Cola has going for it is it's sterile and therefore safe to drink if you're badly dehydrated where the local water's not safe to drink
A friend of mine had a fantastic recipe from Hong Kong for cooking chicken in Coca-cola . Slightly off-topic but very tasty :o;)
I'm no expert; but surely the downside to such a quick sugar 'spike' is that it 'burns out' just as quickly as it appears? And many coaching manuals warn that such sugar 'swings' can eventually lead to diabetes. Better to eat enough complex carbohydrates well in advance and benefit from the long slow release. Wheeze will no doubt be along to correct me, if I'm wrong. Come on Simon, where are you when needed.
Took the MTB round Gisburn Forest from Tosside today.
Super muddy on some sections up there at the mo, un-rideable, but where they've used proper materials, all was good :)
10 mile round trip to Jobcentre to sign off, bloke says to me 'Hopefully, we won't be seeing you again' Touch wood, dam right my son;)
Chuffed for you Merry,well done.:)
Good news Merry :) :) :)
I did 40 minutes on the turbo last night... Another 40 minutes tomorrow, then two road rides allowed the weekend... Saturday and Sunday :) Getting better at last!
Yes this is true
But im talking about when your DEAD on the bike. We have all been there.
The body cannot store enough carbs for a long ride. You wouldnt be able to get on the bike if you tried to eat that much.
When you get up to about 60miles say ( in my case) , you can start to feel it coming.
40miles when your fit , you get away with but a bit more , 50/ 55/ etc and then the body reacts. Remember im talking no stops on the way which is how i prefer to train.
Unless your a very strict on the bike and even proffesional roadmen in the peleton forget to eat correctly you will hit the bonk.
Most every day riders will leave it too late.
I just always carry coca cola mixed with something else in one bidon and water in another.
As Tom Simpson said , Its just sugar Me Lord.
One of the best ways to keep your body in order I think if your riding a bike lots( say 400miles a week ) is too have extra vitamins.
its the bloody drips i cant get used to
haha yes dont try and put a noooooons tablet in your coca cola
yes mate dont exceed the stated dose
Its okay Dave to talk about it on here its not the Fell Runners Forum where its all a bit touchy feely on the subject
40 minutes on the trubo again yesterday morning, looking forward to an hours road riding tomorrow though, even though it is hailing and blowing a gale outside right now :)
2 hours MTBing yesterday. Recced leg 2 of PBR and then cycled in a nasty headwind back to Blackshaw Head. Mud on the cables and front changer froze so could not use gears - nice.
I am wanting to get some rollers Daz... Trying my coaches on Tuesday and if I like it, I will buy some...
Went out on the road today... easy ride to Abergavenny and back... 36 kms... In the sun, great to be out there, but cold but my new winter jacket is brilliant! I did not get cold... Got a pinch flat about 2 kms from home and just ran home with the bike, as I could not be bothered to change the tube in the cold and icey wind...
Now I can do it in the comfort of my sitting room :D
Whoop whoop :):)
Two hours 45 minutes on the bike this morning :) 75 kms... so 27 km/hr average... not bad, as I have to still take it easy... Tagged onto the club run for a bit as well, as I cane accross them and we overlapped. Won't be that long or I can join them again :)
Just time for a solid 40 miles, none of the hurly burly of last Sunday, v icy down by 'ere = very cautious Toff:cool:
Thanks Merry, I hope so too...
Going to call the docs and bring my blood tests forward to see if they are clear, so I can start proper training and do a lactate treshold test, VO2 max test and establish my max HR on the bike...
Toff, it was icey here too... you are right to be careful, especially after your nasty fall last year :( I was being very careful...
16.5 mile recce of route to new job on singlespeed crosser, 2195ft of climb and a few steep carries.
Ah, yes... Turbo session again last night, and tomorrow and Friday, as off to Paris so no road riding this weekend...
Turbo is better than nothing though :)
8 mile to work on ss crosser in freezing fog, would have taken me longer in the car judging by the amount of traffic jams. 8 mile home in dark, be glad when summer comes!!!
Excellent Merry, especially the 'to work' bit :):)
I don't like riding in the dark... hope you have good lights and reflective stuff, so cars can see you...
Oh and I was on the turbo again :(
A Paris Roubaix style ride with my son on Sat
We started at Cromford and battled the incline to Black Rocks, Midd Top and on to Parsey Hay
Ended up him winning a few sprints and it cost me a few quid as well.
I was on the old steel Raleigh and he had my Bianchi .
very cold mind except for the steep climbs
Think it was about 27miles in total
