They still managed to get yesterday's forecast wrong though - low cloud with 30% chance of cloud-free summits turned out to be a cloud-free day (which we spent sitting around doing very little!)
So glad the event happened before the thaw started!

What we needed on the Sticks Pass...

I too found the forest track very hard, I can do ups and downs no problem but long stretches of running does my head in. Luckily it was undulating so we walked the ups and ran the flats and downhills. Once we got to Dunmail and started the climb up to Grisedale Tarn I was happy again. The view of the tarn made it all worthwhile.
Well done all involved and hope the soup went down well? Congrats to the backup team and the White Lion at Patterdale for their help. And well done for you all turning out to
make it all a good day out.
Any comments please pass them on rather than posting on here. That can be done as well for all to read if needed and constructive.

A few notes from my point of view as kit checker and safety marshall at Chk 3
kit checks at this type of event are essential even if its a jam buttie iam looking at.
please bring a survival bag as stated as a blanket is not really the best thing. Thanks to 2 competitors for their honesty and sharing. Think about you and fellows safety.
I enjoy the low key nature of this and the rest of www.nav4.co.uk events. and therefore respect the runners who have been vetted for this harsh winter ultra. There will be a planning meeting for the next events and a few thing ironed out for next time.
Please keep in touch and have a happy xmas
Cheers

It was a great day out. Nice cake and soup at the end and a pastie on the way round! Grand :-)
Finished in 9 hours so cant complain
The winner's blog:

seems a few of us had the dip on the track above thirlmere, i also hit a low until the climb up dunmail. i wasnt critising the kit check stuart we all know what we need to carry and when you you asked me about jam sarnies i had a full pack in my arms and winter clothing on, and agree the low key and self reliance atmosphere of event is what some of us look for in an event and i for one enjoyed the day and will be back next year, well done to all involved
When I reccied what I thought was the route I found the track through the forest above Thirlmere hard as it didn't have the interest of the other sections. When I arrived at Askham village hall I was annoyed to discover there was a diversion onto a permissive path instead of part of the track I had taken. But when I reached the permissive path, even though it was harder going than the track would have been, I found it a godsend as it provided interest and that gave motivation.
Thanks to everyone for the kind comments and excellent feedback. As Stu says, please do give us an comments direct if you wish.
Don't fear the sweeper,
I'm glad you enjoyed the 'diversion', and sorry you were annoyed ...
... incidentally, it wasn't a diversion just a polite instruction and reminder to stick to the permissive right of way, by the organiser!
it wasnt taken as a critisim about the kit check. i think it was given and taken in good spirit about checking your butties. some kit checks go to the nth degree and some are just after stealing your haribo. in the same way folk pack their kit, some skimp some dont.
see you next year
cheers

The best of spirits mate :-) c u next year or maybe in summer !
Can I just ask Joe/Stumpy what is the details of the Summer Helvellyn run and will there be a GL3D?
Was a great day out on Sat.
To be clear, I founded and organised GL3Day for 12 years finishing in 2009. Shane Ohly has taken on the GL3D in 2011 and is organising it now.
The NAV4 Dawn to Dusk Ultra, and The Summer Tour will be on 23rd June. Full details on www.nav4.co.uk in due course. Entries open 1st Feb.

Aye, great Vid, thanks for sharing it with us Toreador and a Merry Christmas to you.
Nice video, Toreador. It brought it all flooding back.
Wish I could claim it was mine, I just picked the link up from nav4 on Facebook :)
Which reminds me, I must go on NAV4 to thank Joe for his second TdH, which was even better than the first.
I noticed for most people who ran both years, this year was faster, yet I would say the conditions going over Sticks Pass were tougher this year. All the sliding around on the ice along the rest of the course must have slowed us down more last year.
I took well over 100 pictures. The pick of the bunch will get posted after some more delay. The blog will have to wait until even later.
great vid thanks for posting the link toreador. looking forward to your pics nick
The guy in shorts was Steve Wathall from Retford and he has storage heaters for legs!! His mate Max Howard ran The Stoop on Sunday - we breed 'em tough down here in the flatlands. It was a great day - thanks to Joe, all the marshalls and Linz and her merry band of soup defrosters for making it happen. See you next year.
At long last, here's the pick of the bunch.
22nd December this year, I don't usually repeat races so soon but this one's pencilled in the diary :)
Did enjoy you're account BritNick! Your blog is a real 'everymans' one! Cheers! Tho' I'm sure you're quicker than you make out!!! :)
Entries are open for this great race. Dragon's Back reunion anybody? book early to avoid disappointment.
I really enjoyed this last year (low key and really well organised), but said I wouldn't do it again as the route's a bit tame from Askham out to Boredale (and back again on the way in), and having done a recce not long before the race I'd seen enough of the road in to/out of Howtown. Having said that, it comes at the perfect time to get a bit of a L100 marker in, so reckon I'll be there. Might go trail shoes rather than Mudclaws this time.
Shame this clashes with XOTF :closed:
Quite fancy doing this again if I can wangle the time off from Christmas. Is Joe guaranteeing snow again? It would be less appealing if we get heavy rain instead!
