I'm sorry but this makes no sense to me. The whole "thingy not turning up at Borrowdale"?
If you can't have a laugh at yourself full stop then heaven help you.

Obviously the individual decides (in the Borrowdale thread case Balin) as to what they consider 'anti-whatever' or 'whatever-phobic' and feels the need to say so.
Personally there are things I occasionally find offensive that have reared their 'ugly-heads' on the forum from time to time but usually I just let it be coz I don't do arguments and anger.:)
Like DT I don't care much for swearing, nor the arrogance of those who feel its ok to speed on country roads (they know who they are and on that occasion I felt the need to respond), but most of all I dislike any personal insults to fellow forumites - the irony of this is that, as FM alluded to earlier, Balin is as guilty of that as much as anyone:(

I'm not sure I can add much more. I just wanted to get people to think a bit about what they say and how they say it. As for 'who decides?' I don't know but I tend to be guided by this: " The quality of your communication is determined by the receiver" so I try put myself in their shoes. All of this makes me sound like a really boring git so I'm going to shut up now.
Sorry FM I wasn't clear 'Thingy' was meant to be the forum name of the young gay man.
And therein lies the eloquent answer.
No-one is perfect, we are all capable of offence. Therefore, if something offends you stay away from that thing or that individual. That doesn't mean that you have to leave the forums here.....isn't there an option to not view a person's posts? If so, simply choose that option for the person who hath offended you....
I think I understand what you're trying to say here.....put yourself in the other persons shoes.....but, then where is your personality.....you'd end up never truly being yourself......that's not to say that you should never consider others, but there is a time and a place.
Never read the Daily Mail!
That's the point I'm trying to get across Grouse - you've just offended all Daily Mail readers as small minded little Englanders.
let me know where you and your mates are racing next, so I can avoid turning up and being picked on - don't you agree Henry?
Of course I'm not really offended or intimidated - but why is it OK to portray someone in the way you have, but claim offense when it suits.
I'm not sure it is about offending or being offended, I'm sure I have offended people in the past and will do again in the future some people do things that make me want to offend them. It is about exclusion, prejudice and loss of dignity based not on what you do (say, act like ) but who you are. ( a woman, gay, black) Anyroad I promised to shut up and its brightened up so I'm off out for a run!
Offended Daily Mail readers? It's my mission in life.
I think I've already explained the piece about exclusion in the example about the young gay guy.
Regarding offence, its in the eye of the beholder.
Say I was on a train with my mate and a couple of pissed up lads got on and started having a go at the asian family sitting opposite. Perhaps we could see the father felt humiliated but didn't want to do anything to make it worse and possibly endanger his kids. I'd be really offended by their behavior and I hope we would have the courage to ask the lads to desist. The lads would probably take offence at us telling them what to do and start on us. we would then have to offend them further, in fact we would probably offend the s**t out of them leaving them with a considerable amount of dental work.
For goodness sake! Don't you think you're getting this a little out of context and perspective, and taking a rather extreme position.
From what I can see, there are a couple of, in my view pretty innoculous and light-hearted posts (I assume it was posts 225 and 227 on the Borrowdale thread) that appear to have offended you, Balin and Old Whippet. These were followed by post 234 therein.
The danger you are taking is to encourage exactly the opposite to what I think you want to achieve. An extreme position encourages people to react with the opposite extreme...and I'm suprised that this hasn't already happened.
Maybe we're just an accomodating bunch after all eh...:)
Avoid extremes - but don't be extreme in your avoidance. ;)
oh ffs. i love banter it keeps me sane. However for the benefit of mr Henry im a nob Porter. I will keep my extreme opinions to myself. But what a cock
Henry seems like a fine chap, bit harse TT - live and let live
I have often thought that it would be a good rule of conduct on the forums that if you wouldn't be prepared to say a thing to someone's face, don't say it on here for them to read.
I know this doesn't necessarily stop all innappropriate comment but it would cause people to think a bit about what they write especially as it is a pretty small community on here.

That Glen Turret seems to have got the better of me!!! Tha knows what I mean. Henry is fairly new on here and was only expressing his view on the comments he read on the Borrowdale thread which whilst I am sure are not malicious they were perhaps not the wittiest. Makes no odds to me what sexuality someone is as long as they aint a knob!!
Sorry for being a cock and the other thing. Cartman's comment is spot on. Hope I'm fit enough for Borrowdale next year, not sure how I will feel when I look at the faces around me. Cheers.
You'll feel sick - they're all ugly bastards.
I'm just so glad everyone is so chilled.
These forums moderate themselves.
That is the way it should be - if not, perhaps we close this forum down.
Brett - can ya not ban these Chinese drug pedllers?

As a new comer to the forum, basically, I suggest that comments that seem to be potentially offensive in tone, and excluding in practice make me less rather than more likely to hang around here.
At work I actively deal with this, because not hanging around is not an option. The 'no sense of humour' 'p.c. brigade' and 'you don't have to read it' defences are predictable.
I was pleased to see Balin voice what I was thinking, and am encouraged to see that some here can debate it seriously
Predictable but perfectly valid, grumpytits. I thought the Borrowdale comments were fairly tame to be honest. I happen to think that some are making mountains out of molehills but hey this is the mountain running forum not a molehill running chatroom....i guess
I thought they were quite tame too, Fell Monster, but it's a cumulative thing. And 'you don't have to read it' response is not perfectly valid when the thread it titled Borrowdale. (as opposed to a thread titled 'jokes about gays and vaseline' which I would probably give a miss).
oh well. shit happens threads run away. however the chaffing bit was both serious and jokey. grow up a little instead of being offended at pretty much nothing. and im not talking bout you old whippet. you seem pretty sorted but Balin and e have had a run in before over a joke
I agree I think the original comments were tame. The reaction to them being challenged was interesting. My later comments were in the light of a wider discussion about diversity and in some cases an attempt to answer some questions other forum members had raised. I have found the discussion useful it has helped me clarify my thinking around the issue and I hope it has provided some food for thought. After all we are fell runners so we get more time to think than most. Hey Tom- don't worry about it, it's gone.
But that was the point it was not potentially "pretty much nothing" in terms of language yes it was tame, but in terms of inference it could be deemed offensive to certain groups.
Also is not the the "grow up" comment potentially a childish response? If not in what way does it add to the debate?
What do you mean "we get more time to think than most?"
Grouse, I just mean, being out on your own for hours at a time, running in a beautiful place, no-one in sight your mind wanders. Most people are doing stuff, watching telly or diverting themselves in some way anything rather than let themselves think. Alternatively I'm trying to breathe, stay alive, not fall over again, work out where I am and desperately hoping I'm not last!
Anyhow Bowscale and Glendermalkin for me now and the suns come out! Don't forget everyone we have much more in common than we differ about.
